Cable breach: Finnish police board ship suspected of sabotage

Finnish police have boarded a ship that they suspect is involved in the breaches of the Estlink 2 cable, in addition to other cables.

The oil tanker under investigation is called Eagle S. The ship is said to be registered in the Cook Islands.

Finnish authorities reportedly ordered the ship to hoist the anchor, where it became clear that the anchor was missing.

The ship has now been taken under control by Finnish authorities and will be taken into Finnish territory.

Three new cable breaks have been discovered in the Gulf of Finland, reports the Estonian news outlet EER.

There will be three communication cables.

“The cause of the breaches is currently unknown. Repair work is being carried out and authorities are investigating potential causes of the breaches,” said Laura Laaster, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in Estonia.

On Christmas Day, it was reported that the Estlink 2 power cable was damaged. Finnish authorities do not rule out sabotage.
