Swedish opposition believes cable break in the Baltic Sea must trigger NATO’s Article 4

The Social Democrats believe that the Swedish government should consider activating NATO’s Article 4 after the cable breaks in the Baltic Sea.

“There have been several incidents in the Baltic Sea, and these will not stop. We cannot continue to react to each individual incident. We need a comprehensive strategy from NATO,” says Peter Hultqvist, the party’s defense policy spokesperson and former defense minister.

Earlier, Germany’s foreign minister described the suspected sabotage of a Baltic Sea power cable as a “wake-up call” for the West.

All NATO member states can use Article 4 if they feel their security is threatened. This has happened seven times before in NATO’s history.
