NORDIC WAVE – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Friday that Denmark should acknowledge Greenlanders’ desire for independence, asserting, “The Greenlanders are going to make a decision.”
Rubio made the remarks during a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, according to Reuters.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded firmly on Thursday during a press conference in Greenland, saying, “You cannot annex other countries—not even with an argument about international security.”
Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen met with Rubio in Brussels, where he criticized U.S. statements about Greenland as “untenable” and emphasized Denmark’s stance against such rhetoric.
Tensions remain high as Greenland’s future continues to be a point of contention.
