The NATO defense alliance is to send ten ships to the Baltic Sea to guard critical underwater infrastructure, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle .
Ships from Finland and Estonia will ensure security in the Gulf of Finland, and ships from other countries will be stationed near nearby energy and fiber cables, the broadcaster reports.
According to Yle, the NATO ships will be sent to the Baltic Sea at the end of this week, and the operation is expected to last until the end of April.
The ships are being deployed in light of the cable break on Estlink 2 between Estonia and Finland. The cable was destroyed on Christmas Day and Finnish authorities believe it was due to gross sabotage.
The oil tanker Eagle S, which is connected to the Russian shadow fleet, is suspected of being behind the damaged cables. The ship has been banned from leaving Finland until the investigation is complete.
